Heavy Computer Use Linked with Glaucoma

TOKYO, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- A Japanese study suggests heavy computer use may be linked with glaucoma, especially among people who are short sighted.

Researchers at Toho University School of Medicine in Tokyo tested the sight of workers in four different Japanese companies, employing more than 5,000 people each.

The 10,000 workers, with an average age of 43, were randomly selected for a medical check-up and also completed questionnaires about their computer use, both at home and at work.

The study, published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, revealed 522, or 5.1 percent of the employees, suffered from visual field abnormalities. About 165 of the 522 workers had suspected glaucoma, characterized by distinct visual field abnormalities.
